~4th April~ Music Meme Day 24

Yo yo yo!

Today's song is a Song You Would Want To Play At Your Funeral. And it was a such a toughie it took two days to come up with an answer. But I  think I've cracked it.

Given my personality, I don't tend to think about my funeral all that often. Well, in case of an in-college death due to work overload or angry lecturers I have left my friends with a vague funeral plan but ironically no musical selection. I wanted something big but not the usual Bette Midler/Sarah Maclaughlin/Josh Groban, so I really had to think about this. I eventually came up with to the conclusion I had to turn to the world of musical theatre. And I think I found something sufficiently heart-breaking and beautiful in 'I'll Cover You (Reprise)' from the musical Rent:

~2nd April~ Music Meme Day 23

And so the catch up continues:

Today song is A Song You Want To Play At Your Wedding. Now this one, is a a bit vague. I didn't understand if it was the song I wanted to walk down the aisle to, or the first dance or something... so I went with the father-daughter dance. I'll admit it, I'm a complete Daddy's Girl. He's grumpy and miserable most of the time, but I'd have never learnt or cook or keep my gadgets in working order without him. I love him to pieces and that's why I chose 'I Loved Her First' by Heartland

~1st April~ Music Meme Day 22

I really should stop leaving this thing to the last minute, because I've still got catching up to do.

So yesterday's song was A Song You Listen To When Your Sad. Again, if you've been reading this blog I've stated that my state of mind gets reflected on my musical selections. When I'm sad however, yes I'll listen to sad songs, but I have a specifically prepared playlist filled with songs with the theme of picking yourself up and moving on. And personal favourite of this type of song is Trading Yesterday's 'Shattered':

~30th March~ Music Meme Day 21

And we continue into Day 2 sans videos...

Today's song is A Song I Listen To When I'm Happy. Hmmm. Difficult. As I said yesterday, I'm a generally happy person and my musical style tends to reflect that, so when I'm very happy indeed, I tend to have a higher tolerability for exceptionally cheesy music. Hence my fascination with jpop. Most of the time I'm smart enough to turn it off before my brain leaks out my ear, but there's these time when I can just shut off my brain for 5 - 10 mins and revel in all its fake, cutesy glory. And I think this is best summed up with 'Ai no Imi wo Oshiete' by W (or Double You, whichever you prefer)

~29th March~ Music Meme Day 20

I really don't know what's worse... a weekend without internet, or a week without YouTube or TGWTG.

But our internet company is doing tests on our new connection for the next 10 days, meaning I can't stream any information without shutting off the internet for the whole house. Gaaaaaaah. Which means I have to do the rest of this meme half at home and half at college for the time being.

Anyways, today's song is A Song You Listen To When You Get Angry. Now this is a toughie for two reasons. One, I only get angry on very rare occasions. And two, the majority of my music collection is specifically chosen to keep me happy and bubbly at all times. So I guess I'm going to have delve back into the Dark Days to pick a song. Now back then, I was lot more verbally aggressive and bitchy - think permanent P.M.S - and I think this was reflected in my music selection. I barely remember what I used to listen to, but I definitely remember listening to a lot of Linkin Park and this song especially when I was in my Grumpy Bear mode. Here's 'Breaking the Habit' by Linkin Park:

[Here's where a YouTube video should be]

(Here's where I should be making additional intelligent and witty comments about the song and the video, which I can't do without watching the video.)

~28th March~ Music Meme Day 19

Next up, A Song From My Favourite Album.

Now I'm going to be blunt, I love film soundtracks and think they are the greatest thing since sliced bread. They somehow manage to underscore the greatest moments and console me in my worst. I worship the works of the delightfully quirky Danny Elfman and the master of musical awesomeness that is Hans Zimmer. He's scored some of the most amazing soundtracks like Inception, The Nolan Batman franchise and the Pirates trilogy / soon to be quadroligy.

But my favourite has to be the Lion King soundtrack and this song leaves me awestruck every time. Here's 'This Land' by Hans Zimmer:

Hamlet has never sounded so awesome.

Next up, A Song I Wish I Heard On The Radio.

Now I tend to listen to the radio most in the summer, when I'm helping my daddy out in the garden or at the occasional picnic. But my favourite type of summer music isn't the big dance hits, it's the generic 'white guy with an acoustic guitar' type of songs, like 2010's smash hit 'Hey Soul Sister' by Train. I find these songs really happy and charming to listen to as they brighten my day. That's why I've chosen one of my favourite white guy acoustic songs: 'I'm Yours' by Jason Mraz.

And so we continue,

The next song is A Song You Often Hear On The Radio. But Katie, I hear you cry. Don't you hate pop music on the radio? The answer, dear reader is no, don't make assumptions like that, sillyface. There are some songs I like that are currently on the radio. Like this one for example.

Here's 'Dynamite' by Taio Cruz

As you can probably tell I like 'turn your brain off and enjoy' type music.

~March 28th~ Music Meme Day 16

Oh. My. God!

Sweet, sweet internet! How I hath missed thee!

So uh, yeah. My internet's been down for three of four days, so now I have a lot of catching up to do.

So, the theme for what would have been Thursday was A Song That I Used To Love But Now Hate. Now this is easy. Back in the Dark Days of my 'goth phase' -which I hope never to go to detail into on this blog- , I used to love this fresh new band who were loud and bouncy and awesome. They were perfect for me. But then they got popular... and this song played over and over and over and over. And people started to obsess over this band which annoyed me. And then to twist the knife they only went and did the Twilight soundtrack. It was then that I lost all respect for them.

I give you 'Misery Business' by Paramore:

~23rd March~ Music Meme Day 15

I'm tired again.. must focus. Tomorrow starts in 5 mins...

So, today is a song that describes me. Now I came across this song when it was attached to a Cardcaptor Sakura amv (God I used to love that anime back when it was Cardcaptors on Fox Kids!). After hearing it I looked up the lyrics and I ended up finding a list of components that would make a Katie, oddly enough. That doesn't make sense, I know. But if you really know me well and listen to this song, maybe you'd agree with me. I dunno, just a theory, really.

Here's 'Who I Am' by Jessica Andrews:

~22nd March~ Music Meme Day 14

Hey y'all,

So today is a Song No-one Would Expect You Love. Now if you know we well, or catch my rants at dinner (My apologies to those people. I must sound very silly), I have a natural aversion to the Top 40 charts and tend to dislike most pop music because it's either, very stupid, very generic, very auto-tuned or any combination of the three. However, this song caught my attention and I instantly fell in love. It's the story of a nerdy boy who pines for a money-grubbing girl but ultimately wins in the end, proving that 'The Geek Shall Inherit' after all.

Here's 'F**k You' or 'Forget You', if you prefer by Cee Lo Green:

I love this song, but I especially love this video. It's so vintage it hurts! I love the whole 50's vibe to it all with the cute little pop ups and that adorable kid playing Baby Cee Lo. Although I am slightly perplexed out-of-place 60's doo-wop / Greek chorus girls.

~21st March~ Music Meme Day 13

I'm just going to come right out and say it.

My name is Katie... and I am a Ke$ha fan.

I know, I know dear readers, I haven't gone mad. Yet. There's so many things I should hate about her: her vapid, blonde, 'party girl' personality, her wailing auto-tuned voice, that stupid dollar sign wedged in the middle of her name... But I honestly couldn't care less.

I like Ke$ha's songs in the same way people like cheesily bad action films, they're big, they're loud, they're brainless and most of all, fun. They're exactly what I need after a hard day's work, just something I can enjoy by shutting my brain off and not having to analyse everything all the time. Now this song quickly became a personal favourite after I saw it get a bashing from Todd In The Shadows on That Guy With The Glasses (The review can be found here.), he really let loose on it but I found sufficiently happy and bouncy to soundtrack the majority of last summer. Here's 'Your Love Is My Drug' by Ke$ha:

~20th March~ BABY hits the runway!

Dearest blog-chan,

This is probably really old news by now any self-respecting lolita buff, but Baby The Stars Shine Bright have finally rolled out their Spring/Summer collection! I recently came across the video of the runway show on one of my favourite lolita blogs, Lolita Charm (You don't know how badly I covet her wardrobe!).

Anyways, onto the show. The theme of this spring's show is most definitely fairytales, with princesses and ruffles and lace everywhere to be seen. As Victoria of Lolita Charm has pointed out, it appears that Baby has tried to reinvent famous fairytale figures like Snow White, Alice and Hansel and Gretel and I couldn't agree more. And between you and I, blog-chan, I think some of these opulent details may be sneaking into my summer collection... I mean, what fashion designer hasn't borrowed elements from their competition?

Some trends I have fallen in love with:

    - Flower garlands/halos - These'd look so cute on a country lolita or for a sweet picnic co-ord.
- Flowing Rococo-style sleeves - It's really wonderful to see Rococo making a comeback.
- Chocolate coloured blouses - Such a cute alternative to white blouses. They'd look great with most pastels, but especially as part of a Melty Chocolate themed co-ord.
- Straw bonnet hat - A really refreshing classical/sweet take on the typical summer boater.
- Co-ordinating bodice pieces - An interesting way of switching between jsk and a skirt. 2 in 1 ftw!
- Rococo styled fan - Ideal for the summer. Could be easy to DIY one for myself.
- Rococo style hat/headdresses - Marie would be proud of that lacey, rosey feathered wonder!

*sigh* There's just some more things I'll never be able to afford. But I honestly can't wait to see some of these beauties hitting Daily-Lolita or the website for that matter.

See you soon,

Katie

~20th March~ Music Meme Day 12

Salut!

Today's song is a Song From A Band You Hate. And do you know what kind of bands irritate me the most? Man Bands. You know the ones. The boys bands you vaguely remember (if you are about my age) that suddenly come back and annoy the hell out of you for another couple of years until they eventually fade into obscurity again. The ones with the middle aged fangirls. The ones that JUST. WON'T. DIE!!!! D:<

*sigh*

So today's pick is the king of the unkillable, Take That. And the song? It's 'The Flood', because it's the one that has annoyed the most after the menopausal fan-girls and the pressed kicked up a fuss about a certain decent solo artist coming back to where he started. Grrr...

Tomorrow: A Song That Is A Guilty Pleasure

~19th March~ Music Meme Day 11

Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii,

Gah. Why do I always leave these things to last minute? Tonight's song is a Song From A Band You Like and to tell the truth, I'm not a massive fan of today's bands because they're all pretty sucky. But this band, was pretty damn cool when I was a youngun but unfortunately puberty wasn't as kind to their music as it was to me. Here's 'Five Colours In Her Hair' by McFly:

Oh so cute and colourful, this video delighted by sugar riddled brain and as it turned out they took their name from what would be one of my favourite movies. And a contrast, here's 'Party Girl':

What. The. Hell. Is. This?! Why aren't today's tweens enjoying the same flavour of colours pop rock I was raised on? Ah yes, of course. The Disney corporation and Mr. Beiber control the radio. That seemed to slip my mind.

Tomorrow: A Song From A Band I Hate. Oh, which shall it be? I wonder...

~18th March~ Music Meme Day 10

Wow, I'm stupid.

So instead of 10 minutes, I left a 2-3 hour posting gap between them... Oh well. What would have been today's song is A Song You Can Fall Asleep To. So, during my GCSE revision period I had managed to stress myself out to the point of insomnia and the occasional 2am flick through my Physics book to try and bore myself to sleep... which naturally didn't work. Then, I found this guy on YouTube called Paul Collier, who writes these amazingly relaxing piano pieces which promised easy sleep. And God was he right! I woke up the next morning, well before my alarm, bright and full of energy. I, of course wanted to learn his secret.

He uses these special sounds called 'alpha waves'. So in one ear of my headphones I would hear one frequency but the other ear I hear a different one and the two work together in relaxing the brain. Or something along those lines.

With that scientific ramble over, here's 'Rosey' by Paul Collier.

Seriously, go check out his work. You will not be disappointed.

Tomorrow: A Song From A Band You Like.

~18th March~ Music Meme Day 9

Well, being the idiot that I am, I was too busy to stick a quick post in for the thirty day meme. So today is going to be a two for one. Aren't I generous? <3

So Day 9 is A Song You Can Dance To. Well, this is pretty easy for once. When all else fails, and I'm stressed out, I just go Gaga.

What else can I say but 'Just Dance'?

Tomorrow, and by tomorrow I mean in 10 mins: A Song You Fall Asleep To.

~16th March~ Music Meme Day 8

Pie-ya! Like a samurai bitches :D

Today's theme is A Song You Know All The Words To. Now today, I'm gonna have to get sneaky and cut corners. Why? I have the ability to pick up lyrics pretty quickly, so by the third or forth listen, the lyrics are in my head. It's a blessing and a curse. Unfortunately, I end up learning the lyrics of the CONSTANTLY repeating pop music I hear on music TV channels or the radio as well as my own music. So instead, I have chosen a song I am desperate to learn the lyrics to 'It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)' by R.E.M.

For when I have learnt these lyrics, then I shall be truly awesome. :D

Tomorrow: A Song You Can Dance To.

~15th March~ Music Meme Day 7

*yawn*

I'm sleepy... so nothing intelligent to say tonight. Day 7 is A Song That Reminds Of A Certain Event, which is pretty easy. For the past few summers, I've been going on an outing to the local park titled 'The Best Day Ever' in which me and my friend Shannon (Whose blog is here btw.) spend the whole day blowing bubbles, eating cake of some description and just generally being goofballs. 'Tis fun.

So in preparation for the Best Day Ever 2011, I give you... well, 'The Best Day Ever' from the Spongebob soundtrack. :D

~14th March~ Music Meme Day 6

Aloha!

Today, A Song That Reminds Me Of Somewhere. This one is easy. Cast your collective mind back to October when I posted about my outing in Margam Park titled 'Welly Walks'. There was one moment standing around this fountain here:

(People's faces are blurred for privacy. That and they'd kill me otherwise.)

We were trying to recreate the Friends opening but SOME of us *ahem* don't actually know the opening sequence. It was still fun to clap like an idiot though. So today's some is 'I'll Be There For You' by The Rembrants, or if you will, The Theme From Friends.

~13th March~ Music Meme Day 5

Go, go, go!

It's nearly midnight so I need to churn this one out super vitement! A Song That Reminds Me Of Someone is today's theme. Over the past year, I have been tuning in weekly to watch a really funny guy called Doug Walker reviewing nostalgic films as the Nostalgia Critic. Eventually, I started watching more and more of the reviewers on his site That Guy With The Glasses and now I'm obsessed! So I have chosen to dedicate today's song to Mr. Walker.

Here is the 'Nostalgia Critic Anthem' written by a fellow reviewer SadPanda.

As you can see (and hear) this video contains some characters and some jokes that are just going to fly over casual listener's heads but these are all in-jokes from his reviews that any self respecting NC fan should know. I salute you SadPanda for writing the Critic an awesome theme song, because he seems to be the only main reviewer on the site without one.

Tomorrow: A Song That Reminds You Of Somewhere.

~12th March~ Music Meme Day 4

Yo,

A song that makes me sad, eh? Well, I am a MASSIVE fan of film soundtracks, which are remarkably good at making me sad. However, a personal favourite of mine has to be 'Married Life' by Michael Giacchino from the gorgeous soundtrack of the Pixar film, Up.

Pixar has this amazing ability to say so much in a scene without using a single word. Their music team is just amazing. This scene blew me away when I first saw and it still continues to do so. I still can't fathom how can somehow can take you from feeling so happy and hopeful to heartbroken and hurt for characters you barely even know. Just wow.

Tomorrow: A Song That Reminds Of Someone.

~11th March~ Music Meme Day 3

Hola,

Day 3: A Song That Makes Me Happy. Hmm... tough choice, a lot of my music makes me happy. Last year's choice 'Our Time Has Come' did eventually get tiresome but I do still listen to it occasionally. But over the past year, a certain T.V. show has stormed the media and is still delighting audiences on both side of the Pond. I am of course talking about the hit musical dramedy Glee! The cast manages to churn 4-6 songs every week with at least 2 getting on the weekly charts, making it impossible to pinpoint a favourite song for very long. So instead, I decided to go with my most recent favourite: a cover of Florence and the Machine's 'Dog Days Are Over'

This show lights up my Monday nights and sets me in a good mood for the rest of the week. And I'm sure it has the same effect on plenty of other people. The timing of it's debut couldn't have been more perfect last year, bringing colour and sunshine to a time when the economical downturn was getting everyone down. I couldn't have put it any better than this:

'By its very definition, Glee is about opening yourself up to joy'
Lillian Adler - Previous Glee Coach

Tomorrow, a song that makes me sad.

See you then,
Katie

~10th March~ 30 Day Music Meme - Day 2

Hey Ho, Let's Go!

It's time for Day 2 of my music meme, my least favourite song. Now this one has a hell of a lot more songs to choose from, because if you know me well, you'll know I'm very fussy about my type of music. I honestly can't stand any rap / hip-hop hence last year's choice of 'OMG' by Usher. However, the other way to make me hate a song is for the radio to play it to death or until I take a blunt object to my speakers. And guess what? This song does both. Plus, I'm about to make the over 9000 millionth Justin Beiber insult.

God, I can't believe this tweenage nightmare has to grace my blog with his presence.  I know it's supposed to be a sweet long song from the 'boy-next-door' stereotype (I think,) but having him wear those ridiculous hoodies and using words like 'Shawty' to make him seem more 'Street' is just plain stupid. Just because he's the so-called prodigy of Usher, doesn't mean he has the capabilities to pull off the same woman-crazing personality Usher has in his videos. Especially when they put girls who look older than him in the video, then it just looks laughable. Maybe I'm onto something here. Perhaps Mr. Beiber is the deconstruction of a modern rapper for a younger audience whilst at the same time being the parody of one for older hip-hop fans...

Well played, Beiber. Well played indeed.

Wow, maybe I'm doing a little bit too much Media Studies there. Oh well. It's sound impressive.

Tomorrow: A Song That Makes Me Happy :D

~9th March~ 30 Day Music Meme (Again)

Howdy all,

If you were following my old blog last summer, you would recall I attempted to do the '30 Day Song Challenge'. It did not go well...

However, it has recently staring gaining popularity in my Facebook this week. And being slave to the bandwagon, I feel obliged to try it again. It probably for the better because I need something to get me blogging more regularly, plus it might be interesting to contrast it against last year's choices.

So, Day 1: Your Favourite Song, again like last year, it's still hard for me to pinpoint a definite favourite because I still jump around so many different types of music. But again, I'm gonna go with Rob Thomas' (of Matchbox 20 fame) song 'Little Wonders', which was featured on the ending of Disney's 'Meet the Robinsons'. It's a song about hope and really appreciating the small things in life, like the love of a family. I really like this song because underscores the film's happy ending perfectly and it never fails to make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

This is another of Disney's seriously underrated films that people really need to see. I mean, c'mon...
Disney + Sci-Fi + A T-Rex called Tiny = Awesome :D

So there you go, 1 day down, 29 to go. Tomorrow, my least favourite song.

See you soon,

Katie

Kommeltary Episode 1 -Thumbelina

The first entry in the girly nostalgic season, 'Girly Poof Sparkle' In which Mel is hungry, Katie defends Disney and people wear tights.

~6th March~ TIGHTS!

Dear Blog,

Last year, Smelly and I had a text commentary over MSN in which we tore the Eurovision Song Contest to shreds. And then we jokingly said we'd do a proper audio commentary for this year's competition in Berlin.   We knew talking for four consecutive hours was going to be hard, so we thought we'd practise on a couple of films first. And thus, Kommeltary was born.

Hee hee, geddit? Katie + Mel + Commentary = Kommeltary :D

So first up, we're tackling the saccharine-ly sweet girly films from the 90's in a segment we're calling 'Girly Poof Sparkle' and the first entry is Don Bluth's (Or John Bluth if you're Smelly) 'Thumbelina'. Just as a heads up, I am aware the audio is a bit on the quiet side but I'm working on it for the next review. So any concrit or general comments are greatly appreciated. This is also will be available on YouTube as soon as I finish setting up the channel.

That's enough of me rambling. Please enjoy our sugar-fuelled randomness!

Next Up (Hopefully): The Swan Princess <3

~10th January~ The 50 Songs Challenge

Hi all,

In order to give myself a kick up the butt with my drawing resolution, I've decided to take up this challenge I found lurking around on DeviantArt.

The main idea is to 50 songs from your iPod/iTunes/Mix tape collection, make a list of them and then draw a picture to represent each of them.

And here are mine:
